Learning to love maths
The University of Sydney's Institute for Innovation in Science and Mathematics Education (IISME), is developing a new study unit in a program designed to challenge primary school students' dislike of maths. Research has discovered that interest, attitude and basic skills in mathematics are formed at the primary school level, and that this is the learning stage where much good work can be done in getting kids to be interested in maths early in their school lives. Hector's World and Google work together to promote digital citizenship for kids
Google has joined with Hector's World to support the development of a new online resource, the Hector's World 'Tech Cave', which provides tools for kids to teach themselves and their communities about how technology works - from the internet to mobile phones and GPS systems, providing kids with the tools they need to use technology effectively and safely. Clumsy Kids: Why? asks new study
Being bumbling and butterfingered is often accepted as a normal part of growing up but one researcher from The Australian National University is questioning whether the development of certain senses can play a role in clumsiness. Training for NSW preschool staff in new quality standards
The NSW Government will invest $66,400 to train more than 1,000 staff at preschools in
NSW on the upcoming reforms to childcare and other children's services. The Community Child Care Cooperative (CCCC) will deliver the training statewide to community-based

Preschoolers use statistics to understand others
A new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that children figure out another person's preferences by using a topic you'd think they don't encounter until college: statistics. ..."Babies and children are like little scientists. Mostly they learn by observing and experiencing the world. Just let them do it. Later on, there will be time for formal instruction, but when they're really young, this sort of informal learning is critical." EurekAlert, 17 August 2010.

Australia can do better when it comes to protecting children’s rights
President of the Australian Human Rights Commission Catherine Branson QC, has reiterated her call for Australia to go further in protecting the fundamental human rights of children. Significant groups of vulnerable children and young people still lacked adequate human rights protection.

Kindergarten whiz kids earn more as adults
Students who learn more in kindergarten earn more as adults and are more successful overall, according to a new US study. Add in other advantages, like smaller kindergarten class size, and the earnings boost goes up to $2,000 a year. LiveScience, 10 August 2010.
