The Survival Guide has an anecdotal approach which
makes it almost compulsive reading for parents who will inevitably
feel relief and understanding as they read about other children
with idiosyncracies which uncannily match those of their own kids.
A brief "history" of giftedness in the USA acts as
an introduction while further chapters focus on issues such as:
- What makes gifted kids so special?
- Living with your gifted child
- Coping with problems (including sensitivity, intolerance
and perfectionism)
- Programming for the gifted
- Advocacy: Working for improvement
The chapters are informative and often light hearted with humorous
illustrations. They are also skilfully constructed with ample
use of subheadings, highlighting, tables and quotes. Parenting
a gifted child is presented in a positive light, as a challenge
and a joy albeit, at times painful, difficult and thankless. Parents
are perceived as individuals who need to pursue their own dreams
as well as the assistants, guides and advocates their children
need. |
