AIR PRESSURE Very few (if any) of us are aware of the tremendous pressure that the ordinary atmosphere exerts on our bodies, and indeed everything that is exposed to the air around us.
Kevyn Westbrook, a former Questacon explainer and presenter, with the aid of balloons and some simple household items, will involve the kids in fun experiments to demonstrate some rather strange things that happen when they are subjected to abnormal conditions of air pressure. He also demonstrates the Bernoulli principle, by the use of a very friendly balloon, its application to aircraft flight, and possible danger to people towing lightweight caravans.
Somewhere in all this is an interesting party trick! Kevyn was involved with NASA communications for 21 years, from the first Man in Space to the first flight of the Space Shuttle, and may be prepared to answer some questions about this interesting period

WHEAT RESEARCH In this presentation, Matthew Morrell, a research scientist at CSIRO will show students how different types of cereals, and different types of wheats, have very different properties when mixed with water to make doughs, and how those doughs can be made into different products. There will be opportunities for the students to get involved by making doughs from different flours, so wear suitable clothes! (Parents of children with coeliacs disease or known wheat allergies should inform the rganizers prior to the meeting so that exposure to wheat based products can be prevented).
